Carantania (Carinthia) English

"In the 10th century, Carantania became a grand dukedom extending from Bohemia in the North to the Veneto region (Verona March) in Northern Italy. This grand dukedom was composed of the Central Duchy of Carinthia and the marches. The marches advanced gradually to dukedoms. The arms are those of Styria (former Carantanian march). The charge is a "panther" which is quite specific to the region. See the excellent site www.carantha.net

The traditional Austrian coat of arms (gules a fess argent) would stem from a story in which, during the battle of Ptolemais in 1191, the Duke's white surcoat became red with blood. When he removed his belt, a white stripe remained. However the first seal showing these arms dates from 1230.

Le blason traditionel autrichien (gueules à la fasce d'argent) proviendrait d'une histoire selon laquelle durant la bataille de Ptolemais en 1191, le manteau blanc du Duc devint rouge de sang. Lorsqu'il enleva sa ceinture, une bande blanche resta. Cependant le premier seau montrant ces armes date de 1230.
